We broke down the motor and inverter tonight. We located the component in the inverter that melted down, But could not figure out why it melted. Upon disassembly of the motor, it was apparent. One of the induction rods in the rotor overheated and burned a pinhole in the stater. The stater and the rotor clear each other by hundreds of thousands of an inch at 18,000 RPM. Once the hole formed and some debris got in that gap, the meltdown was inevitable. I believe the fuses we were running were too big, which allowed everything to overheat before the fuse saved it. There is no way to know the limits until you press them. Now we know.“Once all the safety updates are in place we expect to drop a new world record early November 2021”Roughing in the battery/ engine bulkheads. 1/4″ cored carbon fiber lined with 1/16″ Garolite on the inside.Peter Shadowen making adjustments to the inverter.
We made a full containment, super deep, lay down seat, since we could find none readily made on the market. After testing we installed a fin upstream of the prop to help the “paddling wheeling” of the surfacing prop.An AEM CD5 monitors the vitals, an IPad takes care of a myraid of other housekeeping chores, and Calgo steering keeps her pointed straight.A little bling. She floats well.Installing the steering cable bulkhead, Bert Mensah and Tom Kaufman. It’s go time targeting wet testing Sep 30, 2021A little more bling.
The Dr, Tom Kaufman, makin sure everthing is perfect. Finally the motor is going back in Sep 15, 2021.Thankfully we spotted a leak before installing the motor. After making repair, we finally installed the motor and began testing Sep 15, 2021.Roughing out the cockpit. The drive goes back in this weekend, targeting September 25 for initial water testing.Coco back at build supervision.Fully assembled drive ready for final installation, and water testing.Functional art.We think we found the source of the drive train vibration and fixed it by installing the OEM Tesla output shaft bearing on our aftermarket output shaft.Race pup Coco, overseeing the build.10 build days to Lake Lucas nationals, Labor Day.Finishing the space frame to carry the drive.Making art Happen.Pulling the motor for the final drive and motor assembly in preparation for the first water test.Rudder frame remake. In our first spin up, the drive train had a huge vibration issue. We contacted D21ent.com who milled up a billet balanced coupler that is as fine as the nicest piece of jewelry you’ll ever see.Lots of trips back and for to Ocala to XTREM ELECTRIC MX to try to get it to spin.August 4th 2021 the crew at Road n Race got the motor to spin!!! 18,000 rpm’s instantly with a throttle blip.Wiring and rewiring. Firmware updates and fault code testing.
